About this Utah Agave
Agave utahensis var. nevadensis is a remarkable small agave native to the American Southwest, particularly the Grand Canyon and Sedona regions of Arizona. This compact species typically grows to only 12-18 inches tall and wide, forming tight rosettes of gray-green leaves armed with prominent dark teeth and terminal spines. Its natural habitat in high-elevation desert regions has made it one of the most cold-hardy agave species.
This plant represents Matt's Holy Grail agave, as its native habitat in the Grand Canyon and Sedona Arizona suggests excellent potential for surviving Oklahoma's harsh winters. This specimen is the third attempt at cultivating this species - the first was very small and didn't survive despite careful nurturing for a year, while another struggled under office lighting conditions. This larger specimen, sourced from Cactus World in Las Vegas, brings renewed optimism. Its more mature size and robust condition provide confidence for better success, with hopes of future pup production. While currently protected, there are plans to eventually transition this plant to outdoor cultivation, testing its legendary cold hardiness in Oklahoma's climate.
