Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Fukurokuryuzinboku' is a monstrose form of the Blue Myrtle Cactus, native to the semi-arid highlands of central and northern Mexico. In its standard form, this species grows as a tall, branching columnar cactus reaching up to 15 feet, with blue-green stems and small edible berries. The monstrose cultivar 'Fukurokuryuzinboku' — named after the Japanese god of wisdom and longevity — produces dramatically swollen, rounded areoles that bulge outward from the ribs, giving the plant its unmistakable silhouette and its popular nickname. The bloated protrusions appear in pairs along the ribs, creating a distinctly architectural and conversation-starting form. It is a slow grower but can reach several feet tall over time. Small white flowers may appear in spring, and the plant prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal winter watering.
Ordered from Amazon on March 25th, 2026 — because apparently that is a thing you can do now. It arrived well-packaged and in good shape, and is currently living on the back porch. Hard not to get one when you come across it.
