Pachycereus schottii 'Monstrosus', commonly known as the Totem Pole Cactus, is a monstrose form of the Senita cactus native to the Sonoran Desert of Baja California, Mexico. Unlike the spiny, ribbed standard species, this cultivar produces smooth, spineless columns covered in irregular folds, bumps, and skin-like undulations — the lumpy, textured surface giving it a striking resemblance to a carved totem pole. It is a true slow grower, typically reaching 6–10 feet over many decades in cultivation, with stems that rarely branch except at the base. The monstrose growth mutation suppresses rib and spine development, redirecting the plant's energy into these distinctive irregular formations. It produces no flowers or fruit in cultivation, but its sculptural quality more than compensates. Prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal water — especially in winter.
