About this Little Giant
Hesperaloe 'Little Giant' is a compact, architectural succulent developed from Hesperaloe funifera, and is valued for its upright clumping form and resilience. Unlike true yuccas, Hesperaloe species are often called "red yucca" for their similar appearance, but they lack spines on their leaf tips. 'Little Giant' features slender, deep green, strap-like leaves in dense rosettes, typically reaching just 3–4ft tall and wide, making it ideal for smaller spaces and containers. One of its distinguishing features is the white, thread-like fringe along the leaf margins. During late spring to early summer, it sends up tall, matte pink flower stalks that can reach about 7ft, with creamy-white, bell-shaped blooms that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
This cultivar is highly drought tolerant, prefers full sun, and thrives in well-draining soil. Hesperaloe 'Little Giant' is hardy in USDA Zones 6–11, tolerating temperatures as low as –10°F. It's an excellent choice for low-maintenance, xeriscape, and water-wise gardens, adding texture and seasonal interest while supporting pollinators. Once established, it needs minimal irrigation, with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Maintenance involves simply removing spent bloom stalks and thinning overly dense clumps as needed.
