About this Blue Barrel Cactus
Ferocactus glaucescens, commonly known as the Blue Barrel Cactus, is a striking barrel cactus native to the limestone hillsides of Hidalgo, Mexico. It forms a solitary or slowly clustering globose to short-cylindrical body covered in a distinctive waxy, powdery blue-green skin. Each areole bears six flat, yellowish spines that spread in a star-like pattern, giving the plant a clean, almost geometric appearance. Mature specimens can reach 18–22 inches tall and wide after many years. In spring, it produces a ring of bright yellow flowers at the crown, followed by small yellowish fruit. Unlike many Ferocactus, it lacks a dominant hooked central spine, making it one of the more approachable barrel cacti to handle.
Picked up from Home Depot in February alongside the Pincushion Cactus — a two-for-one cactus run. The blue coloration is immediately eye-catching and sets it apart from the typical green barrels. It's now on the front porch and should be well-suited to life there.
