Winter Survival: Agaves in Oklahoma
This winter has been a significant learning experience for our agave collection in Norman, Oklahoma. Two specimens, a Blue Agave (Agave tequilana) and an Agave Americana, purchased in 2023, are facing their first real test against Oklahoma's harsh winter conditions. With temperatures plunging into single digits this year, we've been closely monitoring their resilience. The Blue Agave has shown remarkable fortitude, maintaining its structure despite the extreme cold. However, our Agave Americana has experienced noticeable stress, displaying significant leaf collapse – a common response to freezing temperatures.

Encouragingly, other gardeners in Norman have successfully maintained Blue Agaves through winter, suggesting these hardy plants can adapt to our climate (USDA Zone 7a). While not their ideal environment – they typically thrive in Zones 8b-11 – proper placement and protection can help them survive.
